One of the factors to rank well as we all know is backlinks.  There are many schools of thoughts as to the types of backlinks that are most effective, the speed at which one must acquire these and also the quality.

So, when I came across Don and Jeremy’s website makebacklinks.com I was willing to give it a try.  Not only are they reputable Warriors, the price was a steal at only $35 for 2,000 profile links….hmmmmmm!

What I want to test here are a few theories;

Does a huge amount of backlinks affect your rankings? Positively as well as negatively?

Can you rank with ONLY profile links?

The understanding is that they use Xrumer to create the links (heard this from the grapevine).

I will be using a .org.uk domain which has 1 500 word article on a standard WordPress installation.  Nothing fancy.  To track the rankings I will be using SEO Elite since I’ve been using this program for about 2 years. The site is in a finance/insurance niche which is quite competitive, there is NO AdSense or any advertising since I don’t want to jeopardise my accounts!  It is an exact match domain with a 4 keyword tail.

Anyway, I went ahead and purchased the links on the 8th September 2010.  The order was eventually completed on the 24th September 2010 and an email with a zip file with 2,692 profile links had been created.  Ok so far so good

Below I will track the number of inbound links showing up in Yahoo Site Explorer and where it ranks:

Don’t forget to keep checking back as I will keep this page updated regularly

14th Oct 2010 Backlinks in YSE = 46 Google Ranking = not in top 1,000

I’d thought I’d give it a few months to see how the site was doing.  Just as I thought, not doing much.

18th January 2011 Backlinks in YSE = 11 Google Ranking = not in top 1,000

My conclusion to these types of services is that they are a waste of money.  Although they seem cheap, they don’t offer you much other than a Xrumer/Scrapebox blast with very low quality links, often, most of these sites have been spammed to hell.  I’m sure the guys behind it are gentlemen but for me this service didn’t work.  If I had to spend these $35 again, I’d hire someone on oDesk to build me manual links at about $2 per hour, much more value for money.

Here’s a tip for everyone who is looking for free backlinks to their sites.  If you are someone who pays for or outspurces for backlinks, why not try the method below?

Its a great way to find sites that use WordPress. Just type the following into Google and simply replace the .edu domain suffix with anything like .com or .co.uk, the possibilities are endless.  Also just replace the “your keywords” with the key phrases that you are targeting.
