So a lot of people’s AdSense earnings have been hit really hard by the Mayday update from Google, (me included). I’ve spent the last few days just in a complete and utter daze, not knowing what to do or how to attack this huge problem. Its not often I walk around my kitchen scratching my head with a worried look on my face.
So I thought to myself in the middle of the night as I was adjusting the fan in this London heat….’Just carry on doing what you did before, you’ve got nothing to lose now’.
Since my rankings and AdSense earnings have more or less disappeared, I don’t actually have much to lose. I thought about taking a time out for a few days and working on some of my older sites which need some TLC as well as this blog which I never really updated much. Why am I leaving it? Because lots of people have claimed that their rankings have climbed back up and they are experiencing a loss of earnings but not rankings. Being an optimist what else do I have? Lol. Personally I think that the ‘Exact Match Domain’ phenomenon is well and truly dead or at least dying.
I ran another ranking check last night and saw some huge increases in rankings, for example where some keywords jumped down 500 places, they’ve actually regained like 300 odd positions which is a good sign….still not anywhere enough to make money. I think what Google maybe doing is recalculating backlinks again or the algorithm just needs time to stabilise a little.
Whilst doing this I thought, how about trying to help Google on its way? I fired up RSS bot and pinged each of the RSS feeds for my sites and also my EZA, GoArticles and other backlink profile feeds which I created in HTML2RSS. Hopefully this MAY have some kind of impact.
In the next few days, as my previous post mentions, its going to be a ‘picking up the pieces’ exercise. Hopefully once my rankings have stabilised a bit one will be in a better position to judge which sites are ‘quick wins’.
I’m currently on many different forums and blogs, especially over at Sara’s blog at NoteworthyTips where we are trying to figure out what sites were affected and which ones weren’t, this will allow us to try and gauge at least some kind of pattern.
My plan for the next few days to get my niche sites back to some kind of normality is as follows;
- Fire up RSS Bot and continue to ping all money sites and ping each of their backlinks
- Social Bookmark all money sites including some powerful backlink pages such as EZA, GoArticles, Hubpages, Squidoo
- Add more content to each page. What I have noticed from some of my sites is that the content has to be developed in a certain way. So, I will ensure that my main frontpage term is about 1,000 words long and contains anchor text which is deep linked into inner pages. Obviously content will be written naturally. My reason for doing this? Well, I noticed that one of my sites where I did this actually increased in rankings is only about 2 months old so it is contrary to what I have experienced via other sites.
- Write articles and use ONLY renowned sites like EZA, GoArticles and Hubpages. I’m going to lay off any profile backlinks for an indefinite period until I can ascertain that this method works.
- I’m not going to change my keyword research process, in fact will keep in using Micro Niche Finder, do the usual keyword research and see if adding any content works.
Would love to hear your thoughts!

Please keep us updated as to if your plan of action nets you any results with google!
Hi Cathy,
Will do, have you been affected at all? If so, how bad was it?
