One of the factors to rank well as we all know is backlinks.  There are many schools of thoughts as to the types of backlinks that are most effective, the speed at which one must acquire these and also the quality.

So, when I came across Don and Jeremy’s website makebacklinks.com I was willing to give it a try.  Not only are they reputable Warriors, the price was a steal at only $35 for 2,000 profile links….hmmmmmm!

What I want to test here are a few theories;

Does a huge amount of backlinks affect your rankings? Positively as well as negatively?

Can you rank with ONLY profile links?

The understanding is that they use Xrumer to create the links (heard this from the grapevine).

I will be using a .org.uk domain which has 1 500 word article on a standard WordPress installation.  Nothing fancy.  To track the rankings I will be using SEO Elite since I’ve been using this program for about 2 years. The site is in a finance/insurance niche which is quite competitive, there is NO AdSense or any advertising since I don’t want to jeopardise my accounts!  It is an exact match domain with a 4 keyword tail.

Anyway, I went ahead and purchased the links on the 8th September 2010.  The order was eventually completed on the 24th September 2010 and an email with a zip file with 2,692 profile links had been created.  Ok so far so good

Below I will track the number of inbound links showing up in Yahoo Site Explorer and where it ranks:

Don’t forget to keep checking back as I will keep this page updated regularly

14th Oct 2010
Backlinks in YSE = 46
Google Ranking = not in top 1,000

I’d thought I’d give it a few months to see how the site was doing.  Just as I thought, not doing much.

18th January 2011
Backlinks in YSE = 11
Google Ranking = not in top 1,000

My conclusion to these types of services is that they are a waste of money.  Although they seem cheap, they don’t offer you much other than a Xrumer/Scrapebox blast with very low quality links, often, most of these sites have been spammed to hell.  I’m sure the guys behind it are gentlemen but for me this service didn’t work.  If I had to spend these $35 again, I’d hire someone on oDesk to build me manual links at about $2 per hour, much more value for money.

I wish you much luck with their service. As much as I love Don and Jeremy I think their offer is all hype. Nearly 98% of my backlinks disappeared over the past few months. I had also purchased 2,000 profile back links. They did show up rather quickly but unfortunately sine they are busted out so quickly they are not able to secure the majority of the links to stick. I have no doubt they use Xrummer based on my won experience in seeing the lack of quality of the profiles. There was no change in my PR or in the SERPs. I still think Backlinks Philippines is better backlinking service since I can honestly say 98% of my backlinks have stuck and its been over 4 months.

  • Sara:

Ouch I had a few typos in my previous comment. lol

  • Zaheer:

    Hi Sara,

I totally agree with you here. I just took a ‘punt’ because an email landed in my inbox. Sad to say but although the backlinks are showing up, I’m not expecting them to stay there for long….. could be wrong but I doubt they’ll help our serps or rankings much. Its more of an experiment to prove my theory is correct as opposed to anything surprising.

Yep, its def Xrummer from what I’ve heard as well.

I think BLP are def in the pipeline but just looking to invest in some articles at the moment but some quality backlinks are due.

As for typos, don’t worry, lol, its all good.

How your rankings doing after Mayday?

    :-)

  • Yeah, I was briefly interested but started “hearing” that the links were losing their effectiveness. Plus, you can get an Xrumer blast for $5 at fiverr.com. I just tried one for kicks on a site I didn’t care much about and I am seeing 200+ links in YSE (can’t say exactly as I didn’t mark down what I started with). But I expect a lot of the links to disappear. So far I have lost a few positions in the SERPs.

  • Zaheer:

Down to 29 links now! Possibly because of the YSE tool being weird over the last few days!
